Proverb: “No pain, no gain.” Although popular on muscle t-shirts, the proverb has been knocking around the English language since around 1500. It is notably used in poet Robert Herrick’s collection, Hesperides, in 1648. The proverb became popularized in modern times when Jane Fonda used the expression in her 1980s workout videos. The simple expression means that sacrifice and suffering is necessary to growth and success. If you could wish for anything, what would it be? Watch what happens when a lazy young man stumbles upon a genie offering three magic wishes and learns the heart of the proverb, no pain, no gain. Theo is struggling with school despite encouragement and help from his father and his girlfriend, Lucy, but when he continually chooses partying over studying, both Lucy and his father leave him to the consequences of his own laziness. When he finds a magic genie to grant him three wishes, he wishes for easy money, but soon discovers it’s not as easy as he thinks. Will Theo continue on a road of laziness, or will he accept the truism that without pain, he cannot gain?
